CO₂ liquefaction units
Advanced CO₂ liquefaction units to recover and purify biogenic CO₂ into a valuable, food-grade liquid commodity.
Unlocking the value of biogenic CO₂
Biomass treatment through anaerobic digestion, fermentation or combustion generates a raw CO2 gas stream. Instead of venting this gas into the atmosphere, our CO₂ liquefaction units allow operators to capture, purify, and liquefy it.
- Low power consumption: In an era of rising energy costs, optimizing electrical consumption is a powerful lever for profitability. Our liquefier's efficiency guarantees a significantly lower operating cost (OPEX).
- Universal upstream compatibility: Designed as a fully autonomous, downstream package, the unit connects seamlessly with any existing biomass or biogas treatment technology on the market, entirely eliminating complex technical integration barriers.
- No lock-in: Gain all the advantages of a perfectly integrated solution without becoming captive to a single supplier for your entire value chain. We empower operators with strategic flexibility and true technological independence.
- Zero interface risk: Flawless operations require perfect alignment between liquefaction, storage, and logistics. Drawing on Air Liquide's core cryogenic expertise, we supply and internally manage all critical interfaces—from the LiCO₂ unit to the storage vessels and final loading bays.
- Smart design for maximum uptime: The equipment is engineered for easy maintenance with easy access to all key components, thereby minimizing machine downtime.
- Low-maintenance solution and local synergies: Our technology requires very little intervention. Furthermore, strong operational synergies can be leveraged with existing local Air Liquide structures, optimizing costs and resource sharing. Our teams ensure technical expertise for interventions.
Designed to be seamlessly integrated downstream of the biomass treatment process, our technology transforms waste into a premium commodity, creating a lucrative secondary revenue stream for your facility.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the bio-CO₂ liquefaction and purification process actually work?
The process occurs in four automated steps. First, the raw bio-CO₂ is compressed to ~15 bar. Second, it passes through specialized activated carbon filters to remove pollutants like $H_2S$ and VOCs. Third, it is deeply dried to prevent freezing. Finally, the clean gas enters a cryogenic distillation column where it is cooled into a pure liquid and pumped into insulated storage tanks, ready for transport.
Is the final liquid CO₂ safe for the food and beverage industry?
Yes. The rigorous pre-treatment and cryogenic distillation steps ensure the final product meets the strictest food-grade purity standards. Additionally, because our chillers use ammonia-free, CO2-based refrigerants, there is absolutely zero risk of toxic ammonia contamination.
What happens to the residual methane or other gases in the bio-CO₂ stream?
During the cryogenic distillation phase, lighter, non-condensable gases (such as methane, oxygen, and nitrogen) naturally separate and rise to the top of the column. These gases are captured and safely recycled back into your main unit.
