Carbon capture

Proven carbon management technologies designed to help industries globally decarbonize their processing facilities.

Capturing and sequestering CO2 emissions for a sustainable future

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is a vital and effective technological solution for tackling the climate emergency and supporting the energy transition, particularly in the short and medium term. With industry responsible for 18% of global CO₂ emissions, CCS provides a practical, immediate tool to capture large volumes of carbon dioxide directly from industrial activities.

The technology is especially crucial for "hard-to-abate" sectors, such as cement, steel, and chemicals, where alternative low-carbon processes do not currently exist. As a global technology partner, Air Liquide Engineering & Technologies provides a complete suite of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is carbon capture essential for the energy transition?

While transitioning to renewable energy is critical, many heavy industries (such as cement, lime, steel, and chemical manufacturing) have inherent processes that unavoidably release CO₂. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is the most viable and immediate technological pathway to abate these emissions at scale and achieve global net-zero targets.

What happens to the CO₂ once it is captured?

After capture,  the CO2 is purified and compressed into a dense, liquid state. This pipeline-ready or transport-ready liquid CO2 can then be securely transported to permanent geological storage sites (such as depleted natural gas fields) or utilized in other industries (such as agriculture, deep-freezing, or synthetic fuel production).
